Ikea Ektorp Bromma, How Happy You Have Made Me!

Have you ever noticed how the addition of one tiny little piece of furniture can suddenly force you to redecorate transform an entire room?

I have been wanting to get a small square ottoman for the front room for some time now, just to add something that would make it a little more comfortable. You see, the room isn’t used for anything other than the computer and a place to throw things when you walk in the front door. This room and I have struggled with each other since day one and it’s been a long 7 years of trying to configure it the very best way and maximise usage.

Mind you, it isn't a great photo (old camera) but the room was far from great anyway. This about previous failure. I just want to provide you with the jist of what was going on.

The room itself actually has quite a few great structural things going for it. There is a large picture window, a nice fireplace, and an open view into the living room. It does, however, lack in size and has an awkward layout. Those two elements combined with my lack of vision made it into an epic failure.

Back to the ottoman – I wasn’t in a total rush to get one because I knew it wasn’t going to give it the change I was looking for. I was at a loss and frustrated and had no idea how to make this room function.

Until recently.

One day, months ago, while putzing around on the Pottery Barn website, I found a tool that lets you configure your space, complete with measurements and architural elements. From there, the program lets you pick out furniture in their proportionate sizes and rearrange until your heart is content.

Swoon!

I kid you not when I tell you that I happily spent 6 hours finding the very best way to make use of my space.

Eureeka! I figured out a floorplan, I was thrilled! I was so happy that I actually contemplated spending the $4,000 that it would have taken to make my decorating dreams come true. I proclaimed my victory to Huz and he half-heartedly (meaning dont-you-dare) gave me the approval to order the room of my dreams!

I got real.

Then I waited…

And waited…

And finally, a few weeks ago fate took a turn.

My son brought home an unwanted chair from a friends house that just happened to be the perfect size for my floor plan (yes,I have it saved) and my little brain started churning.

The chair was from Ikea and all that it needed was a new cover that would match the colors of my house. After a few weeks of it just sitting there I finally braved up and headed to the store with Isaac. I figured while we were there we might as well take a chance and look at the ottomans.

Low and behold… The Ikea Ektorp Bromma

Ottoman!

With Storage!!

Okay, so I am not going into anymore detail about this room for now, because there are still a ton of things (did you see the first picture??) that are on my list that I’ll do my best to finish up by the end of summer.

Right now, I am so excited that I am already using this room in a new way and for the simple, but extremely useful and comfy home sort of way, changes that will be coming up. I can’t wait to share them with you!

  1. Yay!!! I love that ottoman! Even better is the fact that it has multiple uses! Good luck with the rest of the room- I know you cam pull it together for way less than 4k and it will still be fabulous!

    1. Thanks, Dacia! I am so happy to have a project I can handle! I’ve been going crazy! I am so not even gonna come close to spending all that money! That is really gonna be the icing on the cake 🙂

  2. Ooooh, popping over to the Pottery Barn website to try out that program on my own oddly laid out living room! Thanks for the hot tip Ginger! Oh, I won’t be spending the money either, I just want to know how similar sized odds and ends pieces can be placed into the room without breaking my back (and scratching the floor) while moving them!

Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

    1. I hope you are going to have as much fun on the website as I did, Lynda! It totally changed my mind as far as that room went. I’ll be using it for another room once this one is completed! I can’t wait! Let me know how your planning goes 🙂

    1. I know and this is a huge transformation! My daughter and her friend have been so involved and helpful, I would never be able to get it done without them! I think they are taking up a love for decorating, too! I can’t wait till it’s all complete!

  3. Ooo… I got an ottoman awhile ago and was totally bummed mine didn’t have storage. was even tempted to see if there was a way I could creack it open, but i realised I’d probably end up just ruining it.

    1. You aren’t even kidding! I am beaming from ear to ear and I’m not even done yet! I keep finding myself gravitating towards the room that I once quickly walked through 🙂

  4. You still have a very cute cat! 😉 Whenever I go to Ikea, I end up paying 100 percent more than calculated… which is bad for my budget but got for me feeling great about my apartment again. That is why I try to only go twice a year, if even! What floor plan did you have in mind and why are you still waiting for it, did you not order the parts yet? Good luck with that, I’m sure it’ll be a weeklong project!

      1. Ikea rocks my socks! It’s fun all the way through! I am just waiting for everything to be in order. Plus I had quite a few items on my list that involved the room and others that will be adapted to the room. I don’t want to post all at once also so I can keep up with writing everyday. It feels good to be involved daily again 🙂 thanks again, sweetpea 🙂

  5. Hi! Sorry my comments have been MIA, but I’ll make up for it now.

    – Glad you’re back and blogging again.
    – I’m sorry about your fibro diagnosis, but glad you have a diagnosis. Knowing what is wrong makes it easier to cope…and there’s a lot of support out there from other people with fibro.
    – I love the ottoman!
    – Horray for free coffee!

    Hope all is well!

    1. I am sorry to you, too! I will get te cookies done someday, I feel so terrible. I hope you will be writing again, I’ve missed you. Have you moved into the new place yet?
The diagnosis has helped me so much, just knowing what was wrong made me relieved. Being treated properly deffinetly is helping, too! I’m focusing on what I can do now instead of dwelling on what I can’t and it’s helping me a lot mentally 🙂

      1. Yep. All moved and settled. No worries about the cookies. Just worry about taking care of yourself! I’m starting to post again, but summer is just so busy. I’m sure I’ll write more once the weather gets cold again.

You know, I have a friend who’s dealt with fibro. since high school. I could put you two in touch if you ever need someone to talk to.
